Hillary O'Dell, the founder of Hilandel, was recently asked to share her expertise on structured wedding dresses for Brides.com. Known for her impeccable craftsmanship and attention to detail, Hillary offered invaluable insights into what brides should keep in mind. Drawing from her years of experience in the industry, she highlighted the importance of the foundation and internal construction of the garment. Hillary contribution to the article not only showcased her expertise but also demonstrated her commitment to ensuring that every bride looks and feels her absolute best on her wedding day.

Here is what she had to say:

“Typically when someone thinks of a structured wedding dress they imagine the way it looks from the outside: sleek and modern.

However the most important element of a structured wedding dress is what is going on inside the garment. A built in bustier creates a foundation for the fit and design of the dress. It establishes how the dress will fit and feel on your body but also serve as the underlying architecture of the garment, supporting the weight of the fabric, embellishments etc.

There is a misconception that garments like this are uncomfortable or designed for one body type. Many of them are. When you are forced to cram into a mold that was not created for your measurements it can feel suffocating and distracting. That's not the case with custom. My brides always comment on how comfortable and supported they feel and I can achieve this because, as a custom bridal designer, I am creating the look from their body out. This is a style I would recommend for any of my custom brides with any body type because I can achieve the perfect fit for them.

When it comes to where and when you see dresses like this, typically it’s for more formal events, held indoors or outdoors in a temperate climate. If I have a bride getting married at the Carlyle in New York City it's a great choice. If she is getting married on the beach in Bali, I would recommend something more suitable to the environment of the event. With that being said, it is our philosophy that brides can and should wear whatever they want and I am here to make their vision a reality.”
